Random Act of Craftiness~ Hardware Store

I hope everyone who saw the wrath of Sandy is doing okay.  She’s a pretty popular lady.

If you’re friends with me on facebook, you may know I’ve been out of town a lot for work.  So this was a last minute project, and it may or may not qualify as Hardware Store Odds and Ends, BUT I think it still qualifies as a nice addition to our home?

We had these scrap pieces of wood behind the garage:

And it’s getting chilly here, so we picked up this cute little chimenea this weekend for our porch:

It’s the perfect size and gives off just the right amount of heat for us when we swing at night.

No, we didn’t just burn the scrap wood in the chimenea.  That would be too boring….

My handyman built this sweet box for firewood out of some of the scrap wood.

How cozy is that?!

Sorry this cell phone picture is crappy.  I was too comfy by the fire to go inside and get the camera.  ;)

But that’s not all.  The flower bed by the garage needed some height and rearranging.  So John made a couple trellises for our viney flower plants to grow on.

Sorry, I couldn’t find the name, but they produce really pretty yellow flowers.  And they grow super fast.  That’s about all I can tell ya.  When we planted them, we didn’t know they grow best when they have something to climb on.  Who knew landscaping looks best when you plan it out? ;)

Aren’t they charming?  We did a little rearranging with the landscaping and I’m loving it.

And to believe all we started out with when we moved in was leaves….

The changes make me smile.  But that’s a post for another day.  :)

So there you have it.  Wood + Nails = Random Act of Craftiness Hardware Store Edition.  Well, if we want to get technical, it would be Acts.  Plural.  I owe the credit to my husband though.

Happy Halloween!!

I would caution you regarding having a fire in a chimenea on a wood deck as it is considered dangerous and can easily syart a fire on the deck undernwath it. It is also unlawful in many cities-states.

  2. Hi! I’ve been reading your website for some time now
and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you a shout out from Lubbock Tx!
Just wanted to tell you keep up the good work!

  3. I think I need a John in my life to do handyman projects for me! :) These look great! And I love idea of a porch fireplace. So awesome!

  4. Great way to re-use some of that wood…it’s all so pretty! :)

  5. Thanks for the idea of building a wood rack holder. Right now I am using a red wagon outside my door to hold the wood. I like your design and will be building one in the spring. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I love it!! We had a chimenia or however you spell it in MD and LOVED it. It does give off an amazing amount of heat. And now you have the perfect wood box to go with it. :)

  7. I love the wood holder – it looks nice and is really practical, too. I think we need something similar for our back porch. The firewood is out of control.

Stopping over from Random Acts of Craftiness.

  8. in love with your front porch!! It seems so comforting :) Glad to see you back!

  9. Nice work! Go John! Way better than burning the wood. ;) I love fires on cold fall nights and Rick loves starting fires (in fire pits, of course…usually). Boys.

    Thanks for linking up! :)

  10. Love both projects! Your yard sure has come a long way!

  11. Nice!! Sometimes those simple little projects can bring the greatest joy! Enjoy your fires on the porch, Whitney. :)

  15. We so need a chiminea for our back patio! You did a great job with your scrap wood box.

    • Thanks Melody! It’s kinda funny because we have a fire pit in the back but we always find ourselves swinging on the front porch so it only seemed right to add a chimenea up there too!

  16. Scrap wood is the best. You put it to good use. Great job!
