Our Hearty Philodendrons

I’m not sure whether we should be proud or ashamed.  See these?

They’ve been sitting like this since last November. NOVEMBER!  We bought them at 50% off for $5 each during an “end of season” sale at a local nursery.

Wait, I take that back.  At one point, they were lined up against the garage.

Somehow, we’ve managed to keep them alive without doing anything but letting them sit like this.

It was time.  Standing them back up after every rainfall was getting old.

These spots looked good under the trees….nice and shady:

All settled in (we haven’t mulched yet, but that’s a project for a weekend soon):

Those rocks will get moved, but it was hot, and that was a lot to ask for one weekend ;) There you go, little philodendrons.  I’m sorry for neglecting you for oh, about 9 months.  But you are strong little suckers.

Now you can really spread your roots and fill out to look like this:

And then eventually grow up tall with a neat twisty trunk:

We love us some tropical plants! Speaking of filling out, the plants we chose when we rebuilt our porch have filled out really well.

What did you do this weekend? Did you get your hands dirty? Have you ever held onto plants for a long time before you finally got around to planting them??

  5. Those are some pretty hardy plants, living in their pots since last November! Hope they adapt well to their new & improved surroundings :-)

The plants in front of your porch look great :-)

Thanks for entering my Susan Bailie art giveaway. I’ll be announcing the winner tomorrow – Good luck!

  6. I don’t know about plants but I always have things I buy still in their original bags or boxes just chillin. So yeah I totally understand :) I love tropical plants, too bad they won’t do well where I live.

  7. It’s AWESOME that they lived in pots since November! I love tropical plants too, and you did a whole more then I did this weekend :) . Unless you count reading Deathly Hallows for the fifth time an accomplishment.

  8. For sure, be PROUD!! I can’t believe they stayed alive that long! I bet they will flourish in their new home!

  9. i can’t believe they were living in the pots for that long! At first I did a double take about leaving them out since November and then shook myself and realized where you live and that November does not mean snow ;) .

i love the new look around the trees, it looks awesome! I don’t blame you for leaving the stones for later, it was in the 90s this weekend and so sticky i could barely get out of the pool, let alone do work!

  10. They look awesome! I can’t believe they lived that long in the pots! And your front porch is looking awesome!

  11. They look great….I so miss those tropical plants and they way they always grow so well!
    Beautiful landscaping Whitney!!!

  12. Nice, Whitney!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who buys plants with good intentions and then they sit. :) These will be lovely!!

  13. Hahahaha, I definitely live in the land of ‘plants do better before I do anything with them’. But i bet they’ll be happy in the ground, now. :)

    Bachelorette in Curacao tonight. :)

  14. Yeah dude, we still have like 8 plants sitting in their little pots waiting to be planted. It’s a miracle they’re still alive with this heat wave. I love the tropical feel of yours!

  15. Wow! Sounds like my kind of plants! I need plants that can survive my black thumb… looks great! Great progress.

  16. Whoa, those things sure have a will to survive!

  17. What hearty plants! They look great in their new home! I always have bad luck with the plants I would buy for my parents’ house (usually, they’re little flowers).

  18. Wow, I’m surprised they lived unplanted that long too!! I feel like everything we buy is dead in like 5 hours if we don’t plant it. For real, everything dies!! Then again, I don’t know crap about plants. They do look great though planted!

  19. That’s pretty impressive that they lived, lol!
We didn’t do much this weekend, just errands and stuff around the house (in the AC) =)
